Description:

This dynamic painting captures the dramatic moment from Ovid's Metamorphoses where the nymph Daphne is transformed into a laurel tree to escape the pursuing god Apollo. Apollo, depicted as a youthful, muscular figure with flowing blond hair, is shown grasping at Daphne's waist, his expression one of urgent pursuit. Daphne, with long, golden hair that seems to be turning into leaves, is beginning her metamorphosis. Her arms are already sprouting branches and leaves, and her legs appear to be taking root in the ground. She wears a dark garment that is also in the process of becoming bark. The background shows a landscape with a river and distant hills under a light blue sky. The artist masterfully conveys the sense of motion and the magical transformation taking place.
