Description:

This is a Mannerist painting created in 1521 by the Italian artist Rosso Fiorentino. It depicts the emotional and chaotic scene of Christ's body being removed from the cross after the crucifixion. The figures are crowded towards the edges, with those on ladders above showing frenzied activity while the grieving figures below are overcome with sorrow. The body of Christ is a stark, pale green, contrasting with the bold and somewhat dissonant colors used throughout the composition. The lighting is harsh and dramatic, heightening the sense of anguish. The painting is notable for its intense emotional expression, distorted figures, and lack of a traditional background, all characteristics of the Mannerist style.
