Description:

This Baroque painting depicts a celestial vision of the Virgin Mary appearing to Saint Simon Stock, a prominent figure in the Carmelite Order. The Virgin Mary is enthroned on clouds, surrounded by numerous cherubic figures and bathed in a divine light emanating from above. She wears a flowing blue mantle over a reddish-brown garment and holds the Christ Child, who stands beside her, holding a black scapular. Mary extends the scapular towards Saint Simon Stock. Below, Saint Simon Stock, dressed in the brown habit of the Carmelite Order and a white mantle, kneels reverently. He looks upwards with devotion as he receives the scapular, a significant symbol of the Carmelite Marian devotion and a promise of her protection. An open book rests on a pedestal before him, suggesting his scholarly or religious pursuits.
