Description:

This panel painting depicts the biblical story of Jacob's dream. Jacob is shown asleep at the base of a rocky landscape, his head resting on a stone. Above him, a ladder stretches upwards into the clouds, where God is depicted in a mandorla of light, surrounded by cherubic figures. Angels ascend and descend the ladder, illustrating the connection between heaven and earth revealed in Jacob's dream. The inscription at the bottom reads "VIDIT IACOB SCALLAM QVE SVMITAS CELLOS TANGEBAT ET ANGELOS DEI ASCENDENTES ET DESCENDENTES PER EAM," which translates from Latin to "Jacob saw a ladder whose top reached to heaven; and the angels of God ascending and descending on it." The painting employs a clear and somewhat linear style, typical of the artist.
