Description:

This dramatic painting portrays the tragic demise of Dido, the Queen of Carthage, from Virgil's Aeneid. Dido, dressed in rich garments of gold and red, lies dying on a pyre of wood, having fallen upon a sword. Her loyal attendants surround her, their expressions conveying grief and despair. To the left, several figures watch with sorrow, while to the right, others gesture in anguish. Above, Cupid flies away, symbolizing the departure of love and the cause of Dido's heartbreak – the departure of Aeneas. In the background, ships are visible, alluding to Aeneas's fleet. The scene is set against a dramatic sky with dark clouds, mirroring the tragedy unfolding. Guercino's use of rich colors, dynamic composition, and expressive figures heightens the emotional impact of this poignant mythological scene.
