Description:

This monumental painting, "The Raising of Lazarus", was created by Sebastiano del Piombo in 1517–1519, with design input from Michelangelo. It depicts the dramatic biblical scene from the Gospel of John (11:1–44), where Jesus Christ raises Lazarus from the dead after four days in the tomb. At the center, Jesus gestures with divine authority, commanding Lazarus to rise. Lazarus, shrouded in burial cloth, begins to emerge with visible physical effort, shocking the onlookers. The painting is rich in emotional expression, anatomical detail, and chiaroscuro, blending the Venetian use of color with Roman monumental form. The landscape in the background and the classical architecture enhance the grandeur of the composition, making it one of the High Renaissance’s most powerful religious works.
