This striking painting by Titian, Allegory of Time (or Allegory of Prudence), symbolizes the three ages of man—youth, maturity, and old age—through a triple-headed portrait and animal imagery. The three male heads are often interpreted as different generations, possibly Titian himself, his son Orazio, and his nephew Marco Vecellio. Below, the corresponding animal heads—a wolf, a lion, and a dog—represent the past, present, and future. Above them, the Latin inscription reads: "Ex praeterito / praesens prudenter agit / ni futura actione deturpet", meaning: "From the past, the present acts prudently, lest it spoil future actions." The painting reflects on the virtue of prudence and the passage of time.
