Description:

This somber painting depicts the Lamentation of Christ, a scene following the crucifixion where the followers of Jesus mourn over his dead body. Christ lies horizontally across the lower half of the composition, his pale body draped with a white cloth. His head rests on the lap of a woman in a pinkish-red garment, presumably the Virgin Mary, whose face is filled with sorrow as she gazes down at her son. To the left, another woman with long, reddish-brown hair looks on with a grief-stricken expression, her hand touching Christ's. Behind Mary, a figure with a veiled head also expresses deep sorrow. On the right, a younger man in dark clothing gently lifts the white shroud, his gaze fixed on Christ's body with a mixture of sadness and reverence.
