Description:

This tempera on panel painting by Davide Ghirlandaio, created between 1490 and 1499, depicts the central figures of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus, flanked by two saints. On the left stands Saint Apollonia, recognizable by the pincer she holds, an attribute of her martyrdom. On the right is Saint Sebastian, portrayed as a youthful soldier in armor, traditionally associated with arrows. The figures are positioned under a series of classical arches, which open to reveal a landscape with mountains in the background, a common feature in Renaissance art. The tiled floor in the foreground adds to the perspective. The overall style is characteristic of the Italian Renaissance, emphasizing grace, balance, and humanism.
