Description:

This Renaissance painting captures the biblical scene of the Visitation, where the Virgin Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visits her cousin Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist. The two central figures, Mary on the left in a flowing blue robe and a pink head covering, and Elizabeth on the right in a green dress and an orange-yellow mantle, embrace with a sense of joyful recognition. Behind Mary stands another woman in a vibrant pink cloak and a green garment, looking towards the viewer with a somewhat enigmatic expression. Behind Elizabeth, another woman in muted green and grey garments observes the encounter.
