Description:

This serene and balanced painting depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a marble throne, holding the Christ Child who stands on her lap. Mary is clad in a deep blue mantle over a reddish gown, her expression one of gentle contemplation. The Christ Child is depicted nude, reaching out with both hands. Four angels flank the central figures. To the left, two angels stand with their arms crossed, dressed in white and light blue robes with red sashes. To the right, two more angels are positioned. The angel closest to the Virgin wears a dark green gown and a floral garland in their hair, offering flowers to the Christ Child. The angel on the far right is dressed in a flowing red gown. All the figures possess a certain solemnity and grace, characteristic of Piero della Francesca's style.
