This painting, titled "Flight into Egypt", is a panel from the Schotten Altarpiece, a late Gothic altarpiece created around 1490 by an unknown German artist associated with the Master of the Schotten Altarpiece. The Virgin Mary is seated on a donkey, cradling the infant Jesus in her arms, while Saint Joseph walks ahead, guiding the animal with a staff. The background features a detailed medieval cityscape under a twilight sky, which anachronistically situates the biblical narrative within a contemporary European setting.
